How to Create a Gallery Wall

by Annastiina Hyttinen on Sep 02 2026
A gallery wall is a wonderful way to bring personality, color, and meaningful images into your home. It doesn’t have to be perfectly symmetrical or carefully planned – in fact, some of the most interesting gallery walls are created by mixing different artworks, sizes, and frames. Your gallery wall can include art prints, photography, original artwork, and personal photographs. But where do you start when all you have is an empty wall? 1. Choose the Right Place for Your Gallery Wall Start by thinking about where your gallery wall will have the most impact. Popular places include the wall above a sofa, a dining area, bedroom, hallway, or staircase. A gallery wall can also work beautifully around a desk or transform an otherwise empty wall into something much more interesting. Consider the space as a whole. On a large wall, you can create an impressive arrangement with several artworks, while a smaller wall may only need two or three pieces. 2. Choose Art You Actually Love Your gallery wall doesn’t need to look as though every piece came from the same collection. Quite the opposite. A personal gallery wall can be created by combining different pieces that say something about you and the things you love. You might pair a colorful art print created from a painting with a peaceful nature photograph, an abstract piece, or a photograph that holds a special memory. The connection between the pieces might come from their colors, nature-inspired subjects, overall mood, or the style of the frames. Most importantly, choose pieces that feel like you. 3. Start with One Focal Piece If combining several artworks feels overwhelming, start with one favorite piece. This could be the largest or most colorful artwork in your gallery wall. Then choose other pieces to place around it, looking for connections through color, subject, or mood. The artworks don’t need to contain exactly the same colors. For example, a small blue detail in one piece could be echoed by a larger area of blue in another. These subtle connections can make the arrangement feel cohesive without looking overly coordinated. 4. Mix Different Sizes Combining different sizes is a simple way to make a gallery wall more interesting. For example, you could mix 30 × 40 cm and 50 × 70 cm art prints. On a larger wall, a 70 × 100 cm artwork can become the focal point, with smaller pieces arranged around it. If you prefer a calmer and more symmetrical look, choose several artworks of the same size and arrange them in an even grid. Both approaches can work beautifully – it simply depends on the style you prefer. 5. Think About the Space Between Your Frames One of the most common gallery wall mistakes is placing the artworks too far apart. When the pieces are relatively close together, your eye sees them as one complete arrangement rather than a collection of separate pictures. A good starting point is to leave approximately 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) between frames. The spacing doesn’t need to be perfectly identical everywhere, but keeping it reasonably consistent will make the overall arrangement feel calmer and more intentional. 6. Plan the Layout Before Hanging Before you start putting nails in the wall, experiment with your layout. One of the easiest ways to plan a gallery wall is to arrange all your framed pieces on the floor first. Start with the largest artwork and experiment with different combinations around it. Take a photo with your phone and look at it again later with fresh eyes. Another useful trick is to cut pieces of paper to match the dimensions of your frames and attach them to the wall using painter’s tape. This allows you to see the overall size and layout of your gallery wall before making a single hole. 7. Your Frames Don’t Have to Match Not every frame needs to be identical. Matching frames create a calm, modern, and cohesive look. For example, using all black frames or light wooden frames is an easy way to bring different artworks together. If you prefer a more relaxed and layered style, try mixing different frames. Wood, black, white, vintage, modern – a thoughtfully chosen mix can give your gallery wall plenty of personality. On the other hand, if your artworks are very different from one another, using similar frames can help tie the entire collection together. 8. Don’t Forget About Empty Space You don’t need to fill every part of the wall. Leaving some empty space around your artwork gives each piece room to breathe and allows your eye to focus on the art itself. Your gallery wall doesn’t need to stretch across the entire width of the wall either. A slightly more compact arrangement often looks more intentional than individual pieces spread too far apart. 9. Hang Your Gallery Wall at the Right Height Try not to hang your gallery wall too high. A useful approach is to think of the entire arrangement as one large artwork. The center of the overall gallery wall should sit approximately at eye level. If the gallery wall is above a sofa, dresser, sideboard, or another piece of furniture, leave enough space between them while keeping the artwork visually connected to the furniture below. The most important thing is to avoid making the gallery wall look as though it is floating too high above the rest of the room. 10. Let Your Gallery Wall Grow Over Time Your gallery wall doesn’t have to be finished in one day. You can start with two or three pieces and add new artwork over time. Perhaps you’ll discover a new piece of art while traveling. Maybe you’ll want to add a photograph from an important moment. Or perhaps you’ll come across an art print that you simply fall in love with. When your gallery wall grows gradually, it can become a collection of memories, colors, and things that are meaningful to you. Three Easy Gallery Wall Layout Ideas If you’re not sure what kind of arrangement to choose, try one of these: The Grid Choose artworks of the same size and use matching frames. Hang them at equal distances in two or more rows. The result is clean, modern, and calm. The Eclectic Gallery Wall Mix artworks of different sizes and allow the arrangement to be slightly asymmetrical. Choose one element to connect the pieces, such as a shared color palette, theme, or frame style. One Large Piece + Smaller Artworks Choose one large artwork, such as 50 × 70 cm or 70 × 100 cm, and arrange smaller 30 × 40 cm pieces around it. The larger artwork creates a natural focal point and gives the rest of the arrangement something to build around. The Most Important Gallery Wall Rule? Choose things you genuinely want to look at. Interior trends come and go, but your home doesn’t need to look like a page from an interior design magazine. The best gallery walls tell you something about the people who live there. Don’t be afraid to mix colors, nature photography, personal photographs, paintings, and different moods. Think of your gallery wall as your own little gallery – a collection of things that make you pause, remember, feel something, or simply smile.

How to Choose the Right Art Print Size for Your Wall

by Annastiina Hyttinen on Sep 02 2026
You’ve found the perfect art print for your home – but which size should you choose 30 × 40 cm, 50 × 70 cm, or a statement-making 70 × 100 cm? Choosing the right art print size can be surprisingly difficult, especially when shopping online and you can’t see the artwork on your own wall before ordering. A print that is too small can easily get lost on a large wall, while a larger piece can completely transform the atmosphere of a room. Luckily, a few simple tips can make choosing the right size much easier. Start with the Size of Your Wall and Room Before ordering an art print, think about where you would like to display it. Is it going on a small wall beside your desk? Above a dresser? Or are you looking for a statement piece to hang above the sofa in your living room? In general, the larger the wall and the furniture around it, the more confidently you can choose a larger art print. 30 × 40 cm – Small and Easy to Style 30 × 40 cm is a compact and versatile art print size. It works beautifully on smaller walls, beside a desk, in an entryway, above a bedside table or small dresser, or as part of a gallery wall. A single 30 × 40 cm print can be a lovely little detail on its own, but this size also works particularly well when several artworks are displayed together. Two or three prints of the same size placed side by side can create a much more striking arrangement. 30 × 40 cm is a great choice if you want to introduce art into your home in a subtle way or if your wall space is limited. Choose 30 × 40 cm when you want a small, easy-to-place artwork or when you’re creating a gallery wall. 50 × 70 cm – Versatile and Eye-Catching 50 × 70 cm is a wonderful middle ground between a smaller art print and a large statement piece. At this size, the colors and details of the artwork have more room to shine, while the print is still easy to style in many different spaces. A 50 × 70 cm print works beautifully in a living room, bedroom, dining area, or above a larger dresser or sideboard. One 50 × 70 cm artwork can easily stand on its own, while two prints of the same size placed side by side can create an impressive and balanced arrangement above a sofa or bed. If you want your art to be a noticeable part of your interior without dominating the entire room, 50 × 70 cm is often an excellent choice. 70 × 100 cm – A Statement Piece If you really want your artwork to stand out, 70 × 100 cm is the perfect statement size. A large art print works especially well in a spacious living room, above a large sofa, in a dining area, or above the bed in a bedroom. At this size, the colors, shapes, and details of the artwork have plenty of room to make an impact. A large piece can influence the atmosphere of the entire room and even become the starting point for the rest of your interior. One of the advantages of a 70 × 100 cm art print is that the wall may not need much else around it. One beautiful statement piece can be enough. Choose 70 × 100 cm when you want your artwork to become one of the main focal points of the room. Consider the Artwork in Relation to Your Furniture One of the easiest ways to estimate the right size is to consider the artwork in relation to the furniture beneath it. If your art print will hang above a sofa, bed, dresser, sideboard, or another piece of furniture, it should visually feel like part of the same arrangement. As a general guideline, the width of the artwork – or the combined width of several artworks – can be around one-half to two-thirds of the width of the furniture below it. You don’t need to follow this rule exactly. What matters most is that the overall arrangement feels balanced. For example, a single 30 × 40 cm print may look too small above a large sofa. A 70 × 100 cm piece, or a combination of several smaller prints, may feel much more in proportion with the space. One Large Artwork or Several Smaller Ones? A large wall doesn’t always require one large piece of art. You can also create an arrangement using several smaller art prints. One large 70 × 100 cm print usually creates a calm, clean, and striking look. Two 50 × 70 cm prints displayed side by side can create an elegant and balanced arrangement. Several 30 × 40 cm prints are perfect for creating a more personal and playful gallery wall. The right choice depends on whether you prefer a simple, spacious look or a more layered collection of artwork. Test the Size on Your Wall Before Ordering If you’re deciding between two sizes, there’s an easy way to test them at home. Use painter’s tape to mark out a 30 × 40 cm, 50 × 70 cm, or 70 × 100 cm rectangle directly on your wall. Then take a few steps back and look at it from across the room. This gives you a much better idea of how the size will actually feel in the space and whether it looks balanced or too small. This trick is particularly useful when considering a 70 × 100 cm print. The dimensions may sound large on paper, but in a spacious room or above a large sofa, the size can feel surprisingly natural. Quick Art Print Size Guide 30 × 40 cm – SmallPerfect for smaller walls, desks, entryways, shelves, small dressers, and gallery walls. 50 × 70 cm – MediumA versatile choice for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. Beautiful on its own and equally effective as a pair. 70 × 100 cm – LargeA statement size for larger walls. Particularly well suited above sofas, beds, large sideboards, and in spacious rooms. If You’re Choosing Between Two Sizes… …the larger option may be the better choice more often than you think. Art prints can sometimes appear larger in online product photos than they do in real life. A 30 × 40 cm print, for example, may look substantial in a styled product image but feel quite small once placed above a large sofa. Don’t be afraid to give your art room to make an impact. If you simply want a small, beautiful detail, 30 × 40 cm is a lovely choice. If you want the artwork to become a clear part of your interior, consider 50 × 70 cm. And if you’re looking for something that immediately catches the eye, go for 70 × 100 cm. Choose the Size That Feels Right for Your Home In the end, there is no single interior design rule that determines the perfect art print size. A small 30 × 40 cm print may be exactly right for a quiet corner. A 50 × 70 cm piece can bring just the right amount of color and atmosphere into a room. A large 70 × 100 cm artwork can transform an entire wall – and with it, the feeling of the whole space. So before choosing your size, think about the role you want the artwork to have in your home. Do you want it to be a small decorative detail, part of a larger interior arrangement, or a piece that immediately draws your eye when you enter the room? Once you know the answer, choosing the right art print size becomes much easier.

What Is a Giclée Art Print?

by Annastiina Hyttinen on Sep 02 2026
If you’ve been looking for art for your home, you may have come across the term giclée art print. But what exactly does giclée mean, and how is it different from a regular poster or print? Simply put, a giclée print is a high-quality fine art reproduction created using professional inkjet printing, archival pigment inks, and carefully selected fine art paper. The aim is to reproduce the colors, details, and atmosphere of the original artwork as beautifully and accurately as possible. For artists, giclée printing offers a wonderful way to make original artwork available to more people without compromising on quality. What Does Giclée Mean? The word giclée comes from the French verb gicler, meaning “to spray.” The name refers to the way extremely fine droplets of ink are applied to the paper during the printing process. Unlike standard printing methods, giclée prints are produced using professional fine art printers and multiple pigment-based inks. This allows the printing process to reproduce a wide range of colors, subtle tonal variations, and delicate details. The result is a fine art print that can beautifully capture much of the color, detail, and atmosphere of the original painting or photograph. What Makes a Giclée Art Print Special? One of the biggest differences between a giclée art print and a regular poster lies in the combination of print quality, inks, and paper. Archival Pigment Inks High-quality giclée prints are created using pigment-based inks designed to maintain their color and appearance for many years. This is especially important when reproducing art. Beautiful colors, small details, and subtle variations in tone are all part of the character of an artwork, so the printing method should preserve them as faithfully as possible. High-Quality Fine Art Paper The paper is just as important as the ink when it comes to the final result. Giclée prints are typically produced on carefully selected fine art papers rather than thin, standard poster paper. Depending on the artwork, the surface may be smooth or gently textured. The paper is chosen to complement the image and give the finished print a beautiful, high-quality feel. Together, professional printing, pigment inks, and quality fine art paper give giclée prints their distinctive fine art appearance and finish. Giclée Art Print vs. Regular Poster At first glance, a regular poster and a giclée art print may look similar, but there are important differences in how they are produced and what they are designed for. A standard poster is generally created as an affordable decorative product and may use more cost-effective papers, inks, and printing methods. A giclée art print, on the other hand, focuses on reproducing an original painting or photograph to a high standard. Particular attention is given to color accuracy, fine details, materials, and longevity. For this reason, giclée printing is especially popular among artists and photographers – and among people who want to bring high-quality art into their homes while preserving as much of the feeling and character of the original artwork as possible. How Long Does a Giclée Art Print Last? When produced using high-quality pigment inks and archival-grade papers, a giclée art print is designed to retain its appearance for many years. Just like original artwork, however, art prints should be treated with care. Avoid displaying your print in prolonged direct sunlight or in areas exposed to excessive humidity. Framing your print behind glass or acrylic can also help protect it from dust, moisture, and handling. With proper care, a high-quality giclée print can remain a beautiful part of your home for many years to come. Is a Giclée Art Print Worth Buying? If you fall in love with an original artwork but the original has already been sold, is outside your budget, or is simply too large for your space, a giclée art print can be a beautiful alternative. It allows you to enjoy the artist’s work, colors, and atmosphere in your own home in a more accessible format. Art prints are also a wonderful way to begin building your own art collection. You can gradually add pieces that reflect your personal style, complement your home, or simply create a feeling you love. And ultimately, that is what choosing art is about: finding something that makes your space feel a little more like you. My Giclée Art Prints My art prints are created from my original paintings and nature photography. The quality of each print is important to me because I want the finished piece to preserve as much as possible of the colors, details, and atmosphere that inspired me to create the original artwork. Whether the starting point is a colorful painting or a quiet little moment I discovered somewhere in Finnish nature, I hope the finished print carries a small piece of that original feeling into your home. Because art doesn’t have to be an original painting to be meaningful. Sometimes an art print can become the beginning of your own art collection, a reminder of a place or feeling you love – or simply something beautiful that makes you smile every time you walk past it.
